Vertical transmission of hepatitis b virus and prevention of chronic neonatal hepatitis b virus infection by a combination of human antihepatitis b immunoglobulin and hepatitis b vaccine

Vertical transmission of hepatitis b virus and prevention of chronic neonatal hepatitis b virus infection by a combination of human antihepatitis b immunoglobulin and hepatitis b vaccine

Boei Ika Daigakko Zasshi 9(1): 50-59

Follow-up research on children born to HBV [hepatitis B virus] carrier mothers has continued since 1976. Of the 85 newborns studied, 23 (27.1%) have become HBV carriers. The maternal to neonatal vertical transmission of HBV was suspected to have occurred at the time of delivery. Of 21 babies born to HBeAg[hepatitis B e antigen]-positive mothers, 20 (95.2%) were converted into HBV carriers in marked contrast to the results of the 27 babies from anti-HBe [anti-hepatitis B e antibody] positive mothers, none of whom converted into HBV carriers. Clinical trials were begun in 1980, aimed at the prevention of maternal to neonatal transmission of HBV by the administration of HBIG [anti-hepatitis B Ig] and HB [hepatitis B] vaccine. Preventive management was attempted in neonates born to HBeAg-positive mothers. Follow-up results at > 9 mo. after birth were obtained in 26 patients who received a combination of HBIG and HB vaccine. Twenty-five (96.2%) still remain HB surface antigen negative and noncarriers.
