At a concentration of 5 or 10 .mu.g/ml in the light, citrinin did not affect any rates of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) infection and multiplication, but it greatly inhibited the formation of necrotic lesions on the leaf disks from 'Samsun NN' tobacco plants. With the citrinin-absorbed 'Samsun NN' tobacco leaves, infection by TMV remains localized without necrosis occurring. Localization of infection is not necessarily a consequence of necrogenesis.
