A tree introduction experiment that seeks to promote plant productivity on rocky desert hillslopes using only the available surface runoff is currently underway in the Negev Desert. The system of harvesting runoff consists only of small runoff-collecting furrows located on the upslope side of the trees. This water harvesting system was evaluated by considering the water use patterns of introduced carob trees in relation to the quantities of runoff collected in the hillslope furrows. The transpiration losses were found to represent only a limited proportion of the harvested water. We estimate that this water surplus will lead to a localised increase in available soil water stored at depth that could support carob trees having leaf surface areas > 13 m2. The leaf area of such trees would be substantial for evergreen woody plants growing in the Negev.
