The weathering of highly quartzose flint-containing gravels, believed to be the remnants of Tertiary beach deposits in N.E. Scotland, was studied in detail. The deposits also contain infrequent bolders of granite, quartz schists and granulites which are largely kaolinized, but the kaolin varies in crystallinity between the 2 sites investigated. Quartz, alkali feldspars, muscovite and biotite-like mica were variously altered and the weathering products include fine grained silica and leucoxene.
