Seasonal weight changes in wapiti C. e. nelsoni (V. Bailey, 1935) were correlated with certain environmental parameters. Diet quality, a function of forage availability, appeared to be the dominant factor. The apparent duration of a negative energy balance during the winter was 131 days. Weight gain begain in spring with the emergence of new forage. Growth patterns differed among age/sex cohorts. The effect of insect harassment on summer growth was assessed.
