A case of coats' disease treated with panretinal photocoagulation

A case of coats' disease treated with panretinal photocoagulation

Folia Ophthalmologica Japonica 41(1): 47-51

A girl 15 years old visited our hospital with complaint of visual disturbance in her right eye. The corrected vision of the eye was 0.1; severe exudative lesions were recognized around the peripheral fundus, together with extensive vascular dilatation and tortuosity. Macular edema was remarkable as well, while her left eye showed no particular abnormalities. After 4 sessions of scatter photocoagulation on her right eye using an argon laser coagulator, the venous dilatation was diminished. However, since the exudative lesions in the peripheral fundus were active, additional photocoagulations for the exudative lesions were carried out using the yellow beam (577 nm) of a tunable dye laser. The exudative retinal detchment in the peripheral lesion, as well as the macular edema, disappeared within 5 months and her corrected vision improved to 1.2. Scatter or panretinal photocoagulation appears to be effective on cases with multiple, severe exudative lesions or with sequentially developing lesions.
