A case of homicidal choking of an adult

A case of homicidal choking of an adult

Research and Practice in Forensic Medicine 33: 285-288

This report presents an extremely rare autopsy case of homicidal choking of an adult. A 22-year-old female was raped by her former boyfriend when she refused his proposal of reconcilitation. At the time, he thrust her panties into her mouth, causing a ventilatory disturbance in the laryngophalynx. Consequently, she died of choking. At the time of autopsy, the panties had been already removed. Facial congestion and several small perioral abrasions were observed. The apex of the tongue was curled and flexed posterosuperiorly. Marked congestion and petechiae were observed in the pharyngopalatine area and laryngophalynx. These findings suggested that an object was thrust forcibly into the mouth and remained there for a long time. Choking is a rare method of homicide of adults, but homicidal choking occurs in many cases as a result of gagging by inserting an object into the victim's mouth. This victim is considered to have died as a result of gagging to silence her.
