A case of hypokalemic myopathy during long term treatment with mefruside

A case of hypokalemic myopathy during long term treatment with mefruside

Mie Medical Journal 40(3): 385-388

A 76 year old female patient suffered from gaiting difficulty due to the reduced myodynamia in the right lower extremity. The serum levels of myogenic enzymes were elevated; potassium level remarkably decreased. Following withdrawal of mefurside, a loop diuretic, which had been administered since 5 years, her muscular weakness was markedly improved with normalization of serum enzyme and potassium levels. Based on these clinical findings along with muscle biopsy findings, her disorder was diagnosed as hypokalemic myopathy induced by long term administration of the loop diuretic.
