A case of orbital schwannoma

A case of orbital schwannoma

Folia Ophthalmologica Japonica 40(3): 560-565

A 52 year-old man admitted to our hospital because of a slowly enlarging orbital tumor. He had been well until he noticed lid swelling in his left eye 6 months prior to admission. The firm but elastic tumor was palpable in the lower temporal quadrant of the left orbit. CT scan revealed a round, high-density mass which was enhanced with contrast media. The well encapsulated tumor was removed completely via the anterior approach. Some of the tumor cells formed a palisade shape. Electron microscopic examination revealed that the tumor cells had electron-lucent cytoplasm, fine filaments and thick basement membrane on the basal portion. We found no axons in the tumor.
