A case of paragonimiasis westermani diagnosed by open lung biopsy

A case of paragonimiasis westermani diagnosed by open lung biopsy

Nagasaki Igakkai Zasshi 65(2): 26, 229-232

A 54-year-old male was admitted to our hospital complaining of hemosputum. Chest roentgenogram showed an infiltrate in the right laterobasal segment, with elevations of IgE. Accurate diagnosis was not made by sputum examination, transbronchial lung biopsy, and complement fixation test for paragonimiasis. Finally, Paragonimiasis westermani was diagnosed by identification of the ova in open lung biopsy specimen. After the operation, precipitation test for Paragonimiasis westermani (Ouchterlony's method) was positive. For the diagnosis of Paragonimiasis westermani, identification of the ova and immunoserological tests should be done.
