A double blind trial comparing nefopam hydrochloride with pentazocine in postoperative pain

A double blind trial comparing nefopam hydrochloride with pentazocine in postoperative pain

Current Therapeutic Research 45(1): 70-76

Nefopam hydrochloride, a new nonnarcotic analgesic in India, was compared with pentazocine in patients with moderate-to-severe pain after surgery. Nefopam was administered both by oral (30 to 60 mg) and parental (20 mg) dose every six hours. Pentazocine was given orally (50 to 100 mg) and parenteral (30 mg) at similar intervals. Modification of pain intensity in response to treatment was determined after every dose. All side effects were noted. Routine biochemical parameters were done before and at the end of therapy. Results of this study indicate the comparable efficacy and biochemical safety of both drugs. The nefopam group showed lesser side effects than the pentazocine group.
