A host range study of orrina phyllobia a potential biocontrol agent of satansbos solanum elaeagnifolium in south africa

The reported damaging effect and apparently very restricted host range of O. phyllobia make this nematode a desirable candidate for release against the problem weed S. elaeagnifolium in South Africa. However, host preference tests in a greenhouse and outside confirmed that eggplant was a potential host; three of the Solanum spp. tested were also shown to be marginal hosts while six others were unaffected. An assessment of the real risk to related species, including crop plants, needs to be made before possible use of the nematode as a biocontrol agent of S. elaeagnifolium.
