A palynotaxonomic study of the korean araliaceae

Pollen grains of 13 species and 1 variety of 9 genera from the Korean Araliaceae were investigated by using light and scanning electron microscopes. The palynological result revealed that pollen grains of the family have tricolporate aperture, oblate-spheroidal to subprolate grain, variously reticulate surface, etc. It was also revealed that the family is divided into Hedera having larger grains with a surface with large and small reticula and colpi with broad costa, is well separated from the rest of the genera having the characteristics not so. Among the rest, Aralia and Panax having round or unwinding reticula, lolongate pore, and unconspicuous margo, were separated from the others with features contrary to them. All the rest of the genera were also possible to be distinguished. The present suggested that Acanthopanax having less lolongate pore and convex mesocopia should be separated from Acanthopanax having more lolongate pore and flat to concave mesocolpia. The similar pollen morphology of Kalopanax and Oplopanax suggested to reexamine the separation of them from Echinopanax.
