Acoustic communication of young and parental response in microtus brandti radde 1861

The best hearing ability of Microtus brandti is found at frequencies around 8 kHz. The presented audiograms were received by negative reinforcement. Pups are producing two types of distress-calls under hypothermic conditions. The first one is audible and has a basic frequency of about 8 kHz. It is characterized by a primer-effect. The second one is an ultrasonic call of between 28 and 80 kHz. It is variable in number and length of syllables. That call can be considered to be a release-effect. In pup care females are reacting in a specific way to distress-calls of juveniles in dependence of their hormonal state (pregnancy, lactation). Adults are unable to discriminate between their own pups and strange pups by means of the auditory and olfactory channel. The relevance of these results to social behaviour of Microtus brandit is discussed.
