Agglutination behavior of lactic streptococci

Journal of Dairy Science 72(5): 1103-1111

Agglutination behavior of lactic streptococci

We present a rapid and sensitive live stained cell antigen plate assay for detecting starter agglutination using rose bengal as a stain and bovine colostrum as a source of agglutinins. Bovine colostrum samples from the eighth postpartum milking contained significant levels of agglutinins. Radial immunodiffusion studies suggested that only very minute amounts of bovine immunoglobulins are involved in agglutination. The test appears to be useful to screen many strains for their relative potential to agglutinate.
