Air pollution tolerance index of certain plants of nacharam industrial area hyderabad india

Air pollution tolerance index of certain plants of nacharam industrial area hyderabad india

Indian Journal of Botany 11(1): 91-95

The paper presents results of determination of air pollution tolerance index of native plant species of Nacharam Industrial Area, Hyderabad where air pollution is predominant. The leaf parameters namely total chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, relative water content, leaf extract pH are used in determining air pollution tolerance index of the species. It is revealed from the index values that plants with high index values namely Azadirachta indica, Pithecolobium dulce amongst trees, Ipomoea aquatica, Bougainvillea spectabillis amongst shrubs, Tridax procumbens, Parthenium hysterophorus amongst herbs were highly tolerant to air pollution which compares well with its observed tolerance level under field conditions. It has been revealed that the order of sensitivity and resistance of a plant species more or less remains same even in different geographical regions though their in-dex values show a range of variation with respect to external ecological factors and internal physiological factors of the plant species.
