The assessment of water quality of the river Ganga, in respect to certain physico-chemical and bacteriological factors was made. The study included the survey of nearby areas to find out the impact of various human activities on the water quality of the Ganga. About 3700 dead bodies are cremated annually at the right bank (Brij Ghart) of the river Ganga. Moreover a good amount of ashes of dead bodies cremated in adjacent areas are also disposed of at the right bank in the river daily. The high values of BOD, COD and MPN index which stood 9.15 mg/l, 16.88 mg/l and 79.83 .times. 102/100 ml at the bank indicated a pollution stress in Ganga. The study concluded that the water quality of the Ganga at station III on the right bank at Garhmukteshwar was inferior to prescribed Indian Standards for community bathing and drinking purposes.
