Investigations on water quality of river subernarekha were made between July 1985-June 1987 at five different sampling stations. BOD value and species diversity index scales have been used to assess the river water quality. The degree of pollution at sampling stations is in the sequence of I < V < II < III < IV. The river maintains its quality by the natural process of self purification. Specific diversity index (H) of the river does not fully support the one proposed by Shannon and Weaver (1949).
