Antifilarial activity of vitex negundo against setaria cervi

The effects of aqueous and alcohol extract of Vitex negundo were studied on the spontaneous movements of the whole-worm and nerve-muscle preparation of Setaria cervi and on the survival of microfiloriae in vitro. The concentrations required to inhibit the movements of the whole worm were 175 .mu.g/ml for aqueous and 50 .mu.g/ml for alcoholic extract. Concentrations required to produce an equivalent effect on the nerve-muscle preparation were 25 .mu.g/ml for aqueous and 15 .mu.g/ml for alcoholic extract suggesting a cuticular permeability barrier. Both alcoholic and aqueous extract of V. negundo caused death of microfilariae in vitro, the LC90 value being 8 .mu.g/ml for aqueous and 90 mg/ml for alcoholic extract respectively.
