Apple fruit set thinning using ethephon naa and carbaryl applied separately in mixtures and with addition of sadh i. cultivars lobo and spartan

Ethephon always effectively thinned the fruit set of both cultivars. When applied at the concentration of 200 ppm two days after the blooming had finished, it improved fruit size and simultaneously it caused abundant flower bud formation. NAA (Pomonit R-10) was also very effective in thinning the fruit set of both cultivars, and it was the most effective of all compounds tested in improving fruit size. Lower concentrations of NAA were needed to thin the set of Spartan than those needed for Lobo. Carbaryl (Karbatox zawiesinowy 75) was the least effective in fruit set thinning, although it often improved fruit size of Lobo cv. NAA mixed with ethephon was as efective in fruit set thinning as ethephon alone, while the effectiveness of the mixture in improving fruit size resembled that of NAA. The mixture worked remarkably well in the Lobo cultivar, while in the case of Spartan cv. an excessive flower bud formation in the next season was occasionally observed. NAA, mixed with carbaryl, satisfactorily thinned the fruit set on Spartan, but it had a negative effect on the cumulative yield for two consecutive seasons. The application of a mixture of ethephon with SADH (Alar) often led to excessive fruit set thinning connected with excessive flower bud set, which usually led to an overabundant crop in the following season. In addition, this mixture was less effective in the improvement of fruit size than ethephon alone. When applied for two consecutive seasons, the ethephon-SADH mixture exerted a positive effect on fruit size in the second season.
