Female Trioxys indicus, an aphidiid parasitoid of the pigeonpea aphid Aphis craccivora, responded to aqueous extract (having kairomones) of the host topically sprayed onto host-infested leaves by examining such area intensely with their antennae. After application of host-extract on the host-patches having different host densities, the parasitoid showed following differences in the responses against untreated patches: 1. she did not find the hosts at all at lower host densities (< 10 hosts) instead of retaining there for a longer period while she located the hosts earlier at relatively higher densities; 2. she left the patch later at all host densities; 3, the retention period with host is more at all host densities; 4. the frequency of host-contact, prick, oviposition and the Nicholsonian area of discovery was higher at relatively higher host densities (> 50), and finally, 5, the sex-ratio of the F1 offspring decreased at all host densities. Results indicate that the use of kairomones can significantly increase the parasitisation rates only at the appropriate host density. At low host density, application of kairomones may be disadvantageous.
