Biosystematical studies of the digitalis purpurea l. aggregate scrophulariaceae in the western mediterranean area xi. digitalis purpurea l

Candollea 45(1): 125-180

By means of factorial analysis of correspondence the variability of the meditterean populations of D. purpurea is studied. Three natural groups are pointed out. Demarcation being clear between these three groups, they can be attributed the rank of subspecies: D. purpurea subsp. purpurea, D. purpurea subsp. toletana et D. purpurea subsp. amandiana. Several characters are of high taxonomic value: pilosity and glabrescence of stems and leaves, relative width and margin of leaves as well as ornamentation of the corolla. Experimental observations confirm the stability of the distinctive characters in a common environment. The ecological behaviour of the populations is compared. According to chornological data, the subsp. toletana is endemic of the Montes de Toledo in Spain, allopatric with the subsp. purpurea, whereas the subsp. amandiana, endemic of the Douro valley in Portugal, is geographically sympatric with the subsp. purpurea, but ecologically allopatric. On the opposite, the D. purpurea subsp. purpurea is widely distributed on the Iberian Peninsula, in Corsica and Sardinia as well as in Morocco, It represents a very polymorphic taxon. Nevertheless, no other taxon is recognized among the populations of the subsp. purpurea after a detailed study of variability. Finaly, a systematic part sums up informations obtained for the three subspecies: description, chromosome number, iconography, habitat and distribution.
