Boron content in lucerne plants after inoculation with causal agents of bacterial and verticillium wilt

Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) plants, belonging to six strains of lucerne, with different resistance to bacterial and verticillium wilt, were inoculated at the stage of cotyledonous leaves with Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. insidiosus (McCulloch) Davis et al. bacteria, and at the age of eight weeks the same plants were inoculated with the Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke et Berth. fungus. Three months after inoculation the plants were divided into healthy and infected ones according to histological symptoms on the roots in cross section. Boron content in the roots and aboveground parts was determined by spectral analysis. Boron concentrations in the aboveground organs ranged from 31-45 mg and in the roots from 17-30 mg per 1 kg dry matter. In comparison with the plants which remained healthy after inoculation, the boron content in the aboveground parts decreased in infected plants (on average by 13%), but the boron concentration in the roots increased (on average by 23%). A conclusion can be drawn that the infection did not decrease significantly the boron intake by roots but it reduced boron transport to the aboveground parts.
