Abstract
The biological characteristics and reproduction of A. stellatus brood stock in the lower course of the Volga River was studied as a function of changing ecological conditions. Data collected from 1965 to 1985 on age composition, weight, length, absolute fertility, condition factors, maturity and sex ratio, as well as information on migration, age, and the horizontal and vertical distribution of larvae in the riverbed are presented. It was shown that during this period biological indices of the sturgeon changed insignificantly. It was concluded that under current conditions efficient sturgeon spawning is able to tolerate significant changes. Spawning efficiency is a function of many factors, the most influential being the volume of run-off during the summer period of low-water level and the escapement of brood stock to breeding sites.
