Canopy temperature response of summer mungbean vigna radiata l. wils. to water stress in the field

In a field-study, diurnal and seasonal patterns of canopy temperature in differentially-irrigated unmulched and straw-mulched mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wils) were studied during the premonsoon hot and dry period so as to assess canopy temperature as an index of water stress. The stressed crop (irrigated on the basis of IW/PAN-E = 0.4) exhibited moderate to high water deficit. The unmulched crop had lower leaf xylem potential, higher leaf diffusion resistance (LDR) and higher canopy temperature than the mulched crop. Canopy temperature remained lower than the ambient air by 1-16.degree. C. Root zone soil moisture alone explained 725 variation in the canopy temperaturee. Solar radiation and air temperature accounted for only 10% additional variation. Thus, canopy temperature was found a sensitive index of water stress in mungbean.
