Changes in some physicochemical properties of an acid red loam soil as affected by long term use of fertilizers and amendments

In a permanent manurial experiment, continuous application of inorganic fertilizers and organic manure to plots for 19 years brought about considerable changes in soil humus, humic fractions, pH and cation exchange capacity. The FYM application either alone or in combination with inorganic fertilizers and/or lime enriched the soil with total organic carbon, humic fractions and cation exchange capacity with buffering effect on soil reaction. Inorganic fertilizers, on the other hand, caused gradual deterioration in soil fertility with lower organic carbon content, lower humic acid fractions, highly acidic reaction and reduced cation exchange capacity. Liming in presence of inorganic fertilizers appeared to hasten the process of oxidation of soil organic matter but its effects in presence of organic matter was greatly minimized leaving the soil with higher content of humus and cation exchange capacity. The cation exchange capacity showed positive correlation with pH and total soil organic carbon.
