Changes in yield and elements of yield structure in soft winter wheat during long term selection in the southern ukraine

Investigation of 30 winter wheat varieties conducted for many years in different periods of varietal succession has shown that during the last 80 years the yielding capacity of this crop in the south of the Ukraine has become about 1.83 times higher due to breeding activity. The increase in winter wheat yield was accompanied by reduction of plants height from 120 to 85 cm. As a result of breeding the number of grains per ear and the weight of these grains increased. The weight of 1000 grains increased too. Productive plant tillering is identical in old and in modern varieties. It is recommended that with breeding winter wheat for productivity in southern Ukraine, the most serious attention should be paid to the number of grains per ear. Strict correlation between the weight of 1000 grains and the grain weight per plant, per head ear and per ears of lateral stems shows that the breeder can work at increasing all of these structural components of the yield simultaneously.
