The embryo sac development in the olive (Olea europaea L.) is examined in greater detail than in previous studies, including the characterization of the following sequential stages: 1) archesporial cell; 2) megasporocyte; 3) dyad; 4) bispore; 5) polarized bispore; 6) four-nucleate embryo sac; 7) immature eight-nucleate embrou sac; 8) mature eight-nucleate embryo sac. The polarization of the bispore is proposed as the onset of megagametogenesis. The hypostatse, a basal nucellar tissue previously not observed in olive, is described. The bisporic developmental pattern of the olive embryo sac was found to generally comform to the Allium type although occasional cases of Endymion type development were also observed. The time course of development indicates that the transition between development stages is much more rapid when only cell division is involved as compared to when embryo sac expansion and nuclear migration also occur.
