Clinical analysis of 53 patients with acute non lymphocytic leukemia in adults

Clinical analysis of 53 patients with acute non lymphocytic leukemia in adults

Journal of Kyushu Hematological Society 36(3-4): 115-122

Fifty-three patients with untreated acute non-lymphochytic leukemia (ANLL) in adults were examined between 1982 and 1987. Thrity-two patients were treated with a combination of cytosine arabinoside and daunorubicine ("DA" regimen). Eighteen patients (56.2%) achieved complete remission (CR) with a median duration of CR 10.5 months. A median duration of leukocytopenia below 1,000/.mu. l was 15 days. Non-hematological side effects were nausea, vomiting and alopecia, but they were mild and well tolerated. Elevation of serum transaminase level was observed in half of the 24 evaluable patients, but they returned to the normal range within 1 month. The significant prognostic factor for our patients was only the age, i.e. young patients (.ltoreq. 30 year-old) achieved CR much easier than patients with older age. These results indicate that "DA" treatment can be useful for remission induction in ANLL. Eight patients who relapsed or became refractory to DA were treated with "A-Triple-V" combination, and 5 achieved CR, although the remission duration was rather short. New treatment strategies are necessary in relapsed ANLL.
