Clinical studies on serum hbv dna levels in patients with viral hepatitis type b i comparison of serum hbv dna levels between fulminant hepatitis type b its related disorders and acute hepatitis type b

Serum levels of HBV-DNA were measured in 23 cases of fulminant hepatitis (type B) (FH) and in 33 cases of acute hepatitis (type B) (AH). Among the cases whose HBV-DNA were measured onset, HBV-DNA positivity was 23% (5/22) in FH and 16% (5/31) in AH, whereas HBV-DNA levels were 82 .+-. 178pg/assay (mean = SD) in FH and 5 .+-. 5 in AH, respectively (not significant). In 1 FH and 2 AH patients, serial samplings revealed that serum HBV-DNA always rose to the highest level before s-GPT reached the peak. As to the maximum value in those patients as mentioned above, HBV-DNA in 1 FH was 63pg/assay, while 920 and 194pg/assay in 2 AH. In conclusion, no significant difference of the proliferation process of HBV between FH and AH was demonstrated by the analysis of serum HBV-DNA, further suggesting that the developement of FH may rather depend on the host-side factors, (i.e. abnormal immunological responses etc,) than on virus-related factors such as HBV proliferation.
