Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of primary orbital and conjunctival malignant lymphomas

Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of primary orbital and conjunctival malignant lymphomas

Folia Ophthalmologica Japonica 42(6): 1330-1339

Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical studies on 16 cases of primary orbital and conjunctival malignant lymphomas are reported. On the basis of clinical staging using the Ann-Arbor Classification, 15 cases were Stage I and 1 case was Stage II. Four patients had local recurrences; one died due to recurrence at another site. When broken down on the basis of the Lymphoma Study Group Classification, 5 cases were of diffuse small cell type, 9 were of diffuse medium-sized cell type, 1 of diffuse mixed type and 1 of diffuse large cell type. Intermediate lymphocytic lymphoma, a subtype of diffuse medium-sized cell type, was the most commonly observed histological type. The results of immunohistochemical studies on paraffin sections indicated that the lymphoma cells in 15 cases were of B-cell origin. Fresh biopsied material taken from 9 patients and fixed with periodate-lysine-paraformaldehyde solution was used for immunohistochemical study. Immunohistochemical results suggest that the lymphoma cells in 7 cases might have derived from mantle-zone lymphocytes and that lymphoma cell proliferation rate may be low.
