Coexistence of rheumatoid arthritis and articular chondrocalcinosis on 5 cases

Coexistence of rheumatoid arthritis and articular chondrocalcinosis on 5 cases

Rhumatologie 41(2): 41-50

The authors report five cases of coexistent Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC). These cases are women, aged 50 to 72 years with definite RA, seropositive in 3 of 5 cases with an acrosyndrome in 4 cases. ACC is diagnosed radiologically 3 times and by synovial fluid analysis in the 2 other cases. The diagnosis of RA precedes that of ACC in 3 cases, HLA DR6 antigen is found in 3 out of 4 research. Such an association is rarely reported (about 80 cases), some studies showing a decrease of ACC prevalence in RA patients. The relationship between those two conditions remains open to discuss: fortuitous association, inducing or protective role of one to the other ? These observations illustrate the difficulty of diagnosis and the failure of the criteria classically used.
