Comparative investigations on the effect of different foods on development and reproduction of amblyseius aberrans oud. and amblyseius finlandicus oud. acarina phytoseiidae

The influence of different foods on development and reproduction of Amblyseius aberrans Oud. and Amblyseius finlandicus Oud. was tested in the laboratory. Comparatively the predators got offered as food different prey species (Tetranychus urticae Koch [Tetranychidae], Cecidophyopsis ribis Westwood [Eryophyidae]) and pollen of apple, cherry and birch. The eryophyid C. ribis as prey effected short development and high oviposition rates in both phytoseiid mites. In comparison T. urticae had unfavourable influence on duration of immature stages and reproduction. In general the studies indicate the high value of pollen as source of food for A. aberrans and A. finlandicus. All tested sorts of pollen led to complete development and the adults were able to reproduce readily. When fed on pollen of birch and cherry especially A. finlandicus needed short time for development and showed a high rate of oviposition. Pollen of cherry had positive effects on A. aberrans, too. In comparison with all tested sorts pollen of apple had a rather unfavourable influence on duration of immature stages and reproduction. Feeding on pollen of birch A. finlandicus started oviposition after hibernation earlier than feeding on T. urticae.
