Comparative studies of chromosomes of the timopheevii tetraploid wheats group by the differential staining method

Comparative analysis of C-banded chromosomes of tetraploid wheats of the timopheevii group was carried out. Two geographically separated populations of Triticum araraticum, T. timopheevii and T. militinae were analysed. Comparison of linear segmentation of two populations of T. araraticum and those of T. timopheevii and T. militinae showed that morphology of chromosomes and distribution of heterochromatin segments along the chromosomes were basically similar in two populations of T. araraticum, and in T. timopheevii and T. militinae T. araraticum differs from T. timopheevii and T. militinae by three chromosomes. The wheats of the timopheevii group significantly differ from T. aestivum in chromosome morphology and distribution of heterochromatin segments. Nevertheless, karyotypes of T. timopheevii and T. militinae proved to contain a chromosome identical to the 4A chromosome of T. aestivum (the former nomenclature). This chromosome has significantly different morphology in both populations of T. araraticum and differs from the 4A chromosome of common wheat. Based on the data obtained, T. timopheevii is supposed to be originated as a result of hybridization of T. araraticum with one of wheats of the turgidum group with a 4A-like chromosome.
