Comparative studies on the fauna and ecology of lepidopterans in variously structured forest surfaces in the kottenforst near bonn west germany
Light traps were used to study the lepidopteran communities at 5 selected localities in the Kottenforst in 1985 and 1986. About 41,000 nocturnal Lepidoptera were available for evaluation, of which 32,000 belonged to approximately 360 macrolepidopteran species. The families Geometridae and Noctuidae as well as the bombyces and Sphingidae family group showed clear preferences for particular areas, as dominance relationships indicated. Dominance structures for macrolepidopterans were rather shallow in most areas, with individual species achieving a strongly dominant position only in the high and young spruce forests (Lymantia monacha, Diarsia brunnea and Peribatodes secundaria). The proportion of females were comparable to those of other authors. Shannon-Wiener and Williams index diversity values were calculated. The arrangement of dominant species into trophic groups further manifested clear differences between localities. Zoonosis affiliation and association of representative species could be determined on the basis of food plants, dominance and representativeness. The lepidopteran communities in the 5 areas of study were characterized and differentiated on the basis of dominant and associated species.
