Compatibility of chemical pesticides with the entomopathogenic nematodes steinernema carpocapsae weiser and steinernema feltiae filipjev nematoda steinernematidae

In a study on the compatibility of entomopathogenic nematodes with chemical pesticides, the response of Steinernema carpocapsae and S. feltiae to 75 commercial pesticides has been assessed. Results indicate that the infective juveniles of both species tolerate most of the tested chemicals. The response of the two species to the different pesticides appears to be very similar. Only dodine for the fungicides and alachlor and paraquat for the herbicides seriously affected the juveniles. By contrast a larger proportion of formulations in the insecticide-acaricide-nematicide group were harmful. Of these, parathion, aldicarb, methomyl, flubenzimine, metham sodium and fenamiphos were the most toxic. Overall, results indicate the feasibility of an integrated use of these nematode species and chemical pesticides in crop protection.
