Composition and content of phycobiliproteins in symbiotic nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium anabaena azollae cells from various azolla fern species

Phycobilisomes of the symbiotic N2-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae were isolated from five Azolla species: Az. pinnata, Az. filliculoides, Az. mexicana, Az. caroliniana and Az. microphylla. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of both native phycobilisomes and those in the presence of denaturing agents showed that C-phycoerithrin, phycoerithrocyanin, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and allophycocyanin "B" were synthesized in An. azollae cells. A comparative study of the cell and phycogilisome absorption spectra of An. azollae from various Azolla species grown under equal conditions demonstrated different C-phycoerithrin and phycocyanin levels in relation to chlorophyll. The phycoerithrin and phycocyanin levels in cyanobacterium cells from one and the same Azolla species was observed to decrease with declining the time from fern biomass doubling. The differences in phycobiliprotein content in An. azollae from various Azolla species are proposed to be due to different growth rates of the fern.
