Content and structural organization of phycobilin pigments in nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria anabaena azollae

Content and structural organization of phycobilin pigments in nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria anabaena azollae

Biofizika 33(2): 270-274

Pigment apparatus of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria Anabaena azollae isolated from symbiotic association Azolla pinnata - Anabaena azollae was studied. Absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra at the selective excitation of each pigment, fluorescence excitation spectra of Photosystems 1 and 2 at 266 and 77 K, circular dichroism spectra, and the absorption second derivative at 266.degree. K were measured. A conclusion was made that A. azollae contained the following phycobiliproteins: phycoerythrin, phycoerythrocyanin, phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. Differences were found in the relative contant and functional coupling of pigments of the vegetative cells and the heterocysts. Basing on the qualitative estimation of the efficiency of the energy transfer from phycobiliproteins to chlorophyll, we concluded that phycoerythrin, phycoerythrocyanin and allophycocyanin are energy-bound with both Photosystems 1 and 2, while phycocyanin is mainly bound with Photosystem 2.
