Four plant ruderal communities are documented from a large city of West Siberia. The low number of syntaxonomic units is a consequence of the fairly recent origin of Novosibirsk's ruderal vegetation comprising prevailingly non-Siberian species. The numbers of ruderal communities recognised in various regions of Europe, extensiveness of vaguely defined syntaxonomical units, and complexity of their system are discussed. Certain simplifications of the syntaxonomical system of ruderal vegetation are suggested.
