Corticofugal changes in the activity of the trigeminal nucleus and central gray matter neurons in response to nociceptive stimulation

In acute experiments on the anesthetized cats, changes in the activity of nociceptive and convergent neurons of the trigeminal nucleus and the central gray matter were studied at the stimulation of different cortical areas. The nociceptive response of the trigeminal neurons was shown to be inhibited only by stimulation of the coronal gyrus, while the response of the central gray neurons to nociceptive stimulation appeared to be inhibited by stimulation of the projection region of the coronal gyrus, as well as the somatosensory cortex and the prefrontal association area (gyrus proreus). Our findings indicate that corticofugal inhibition of the nociceptive activity in the trigeminal and central grey matter neurons is not mediated by activation of the brainstem antinociceptive system.
