Cortisol bioconversion with some local bacteria

The convertibility of cortisol to its more therapeutically potent C 1-2 dehydro derivative (prednisolone) was tested using four different locally isolated bacteria. Of these Mycobacterium rhodochrous ATCC 3639 was by far the most effective. Best prednisolone yield (26.0%) along with the production of 20 B-hydroxy prednisolone (44.0% yield) were achieved after 48 hr upon using a transformation medium composed of g/1: glucose, 30;peptone, 5; beef extract, 3; yeast extract, 1.0.
