Cortisol induced increase in susceptibility of atlantic salmon salmo salar to vibrio salmonicida together with effects on the blood cell pattern

The administration of cortisol in the food of Atlantic salmon (Salmo-salar) resulted in increased susceptibility to Vibrio-salmonicida which causes cold-water vibriosis. Individuals treated with cortisol for 1 day before bacterial infection were more susceptible than individuals treated for 4 days before infection. Treatment with cortisol for 1 day caused a clear reduction of circulating thrombocytes and lymphocytes. In addition, numerous degenerated cells were observed. These were believed to represent granulocytes. After 4 days on cortisol diet, there was no significant difference between cortisol-treated fish and controls with respect to numbers of lymphocytes and granulocytes. The thrombocytes were affected, however, by sticking together. The number of thrombocytes per cluster varied from approximately 5 to more than 50.
