Costs and benefits from fall irrigation at a sandy loblolly pine nursery

The cost and benefits of fall irrigation were determined for a bare-root loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) nursery in Florida [USA]. Although the cost of applying 13 cm of water was less than $42/ha, the additional irrigations decreased the production of cull seedlings by 5 percentage points and increased the production of Grade 1 seedlings by 19 percentage points. Although the additional production of plantable seedlings (100,000/ha) the potential economic gains from increasing outplanting performance were even greater. For example, the additional production of Grade 1 seedlings (380,000/ha) increased the present new worth by $11,4000/ha (assuming the present net worth of a Grade 1 seedling is 3 cents more than a Grade 2 seedling). An additional increase in networth of the crop may also result when ther is a limited supply of seed from second generation seed orchards. Potential reductions in the present net worth of the crop can result if fall irrigation adversely affects seedling morphology.
