Cotton fiber for nonwovens

Cotton fiber for nonwovens

TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Industry) Journal 73(6): 179-185

Compared with the three leading fibers (polyolefins, polyesters, and rayons), very little cotton is currently used in the nonwoven fabrics industry. The objective of a recently initiated project at the Southern Regional Research Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture, has been to investigate cotton-containing nonwoven textiles with properties acceptable for consumer uses. The purpose is more utilization of cotton. Thermal bonding has been selected as the major technique for producing fabric integrity, but other techniques also will be examined. Initial research involved fiber analysis, opening and blending performance, uniformity, and processibility of bleached cottons, with and without lubricant finishes. Fabric properties of calendered cotton and polypropylene blends from an initial trial run also were evaluated.
