Cough as the sole presentation of bronchial asthma

Cough as the sole presentation of bronchial asthma

Folia Allergologica et Immunologica Clinica 37(2): 85-91

This study has been designed in order to evaluate if a chronic cough could be an asthmatic equivalent or not. 62 children and 51 adults have been selected for the study. They were all affected with chronic cough without any ascertained responsible disease. They have been examinated by clinical history, skin prick test and non specific bronchial provocation test (metacholine). 29 children and 27 adults were skin positives; 50 children and 37 adults responded to the bronchial challenge with a PD20 lower than that characteristic of the normal. Our results are in a good agreement with the conclusion that the chronic cough not induced by other causes may be regarded as an asthmatic equivalent always in atopics, many times in non atopic patients.
