Cytochemical studies on the localization of acid phosphatases and alkaline phosphatase activity in the tegument of the larval trematodes euhaplorchis californiensis maratrema uca and small strigeids

This investigation presents a composite of the cytochemistry in larvae of small strigeids and two other inadequately studied trematodes, Euhaplorchis californiensis and Maratrema uca. The presence of acid and alkaline phosphatases was detected, and ultrastuctrally, these phosphatase activities were observed to be associated with the microvilli of the tegument and the membranous structures of the cytoplasmic layer. It is suggested that phosphatases may be associated with the absorption and transfer of nutrients into the body of the developing larvae. The possible roles of these enzymes and evidence of transmmembranosis are discussed.
