Cytogenetic studies on th f 1 hybrids of solanum pubescens with solanum melongena and solanum melongena var incanum

Cytogenetic studies on th f 1 hybrids of solanum pubescens with solanum melongena and solanum melongena var incanum

Indian Journal of Botany 11(1): 22-28

Interspecific hybridizations were made through artificial hand pollinations involving a nonspinous species (Solanum pubescens Willd.) and two taxa assigned to the spinous Solanum species (S. melongena L. and S. melongena var. insanum Prain) of the non-tuberiferous Solanaceae. On the basis of the interspecific cross compatibilities and the bahaviour of the chromosomes at meiosis in the F1 hybrids it is concluded that the nonspinous and spinous members of the family are cross compatible and that they have retained sufficient chromosomal homeologies that permit their pairing and therefore recombination in the heterozygous state. The concept that the spinous and nonspinous members are not crossable is disproved. Relevant cytogenetic data on these studies are reported now.
