Development time of the beet armyworm spodoptera exigua huebner and the tobacco budworm heliothis virescens f. lepidoptera noctuidae in function of temperature

The thermal threshold of development for the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua was 14.0.degree. C for the egg and the larval stage, while it was 13.5.degree. C for the pupal stage. Thermal constants were 39.16 .+-. 0.69, 227.12 .+-. 2.29, 95.76 .+-. 2.77 and 358.06 .+-. 4.26 degrees/days for egg, larval and pupal stages and for total development, respectively. The estimated thermal thresholds of development for the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens were 14.0, 12.0, 9.0 and 11.6 for the egg, larval and pupal stages and total of development, respectively. Thermal constants for the respective stages amounted to 31.6 .+-. 0.17, 195.39 .+-. 9.71, 202.55 .+-. 7.88 and 410.34 .+-. 18.16 degrees/days. The young age group of the S. exigua and H. virescens population consisted of about 85.6% and 84.6%, the middle age group 8.6% and 8.5%, while the old age group represented 5.8% and 6.9%, respectively. The percentage mortality was 28.0, 35.6, 11.7 and 25% for the egg, larval, pupal and adult stage of S. exigua, respectively, while it was 16.7, 38.3, 8.0 and 37% for the same stages of H. virescens, respectively.
