Differential response of certain induced short culm mutants of basmati 370 to gibberellic acid

The germinated seeds of Basmati-370 and its mutants were grown in different concentrations of GA3 solutions, viz., 3 ppm, 6 ppm and 9 ppm, using double distilled water as the control (0 ppm). The response of various mutants to GA3 was oberved for shoot and root length, besides seedling fresh and dry weights. The different short-culm mutants showed varied responses to different concentrations of GA3 depending on their endogenous levels caused by mutated genes. It is significant to note that both Sd10 and ed1 possessing non-allelic Sd genes, showed least response to exogenous GA3. Whereas, short-culm mutants allelic to DGWG, showed moderate to high response to GA3 application. Comparative GA3 response may be advantageously considered to indirectly evaluate allelism to DGWG locus.
