Distribution and growth of diastylis rathkei crustacea cumacea in kiel bay western baltic

Distribution and growth of diastylis rathkei crustacea cumacea in kiel bay western baltic

Meeresforschung 32(3): 204-217

A field study was conducted in 1986/87 to estimate abundance, growth, and production/biomass (P/.hivin.B) ratio of the cumacean Diastylis rathkei Kroyer in Kiel Bay, Western Baltic Sea. Twenty stations were covered, of which four, representing different sediment types, were sampled monthly with a van Veen grab over an annual cycle. D. rathkei was found at all stations, with densities ranging from 2 to 3500 specimens m-2. Developmental stages were compared with the growth patterns obtained from length and weight measurements. A seasonally oscillating von Bertalanffy growth curve, fitted separately for males and females by means of the ELEFAN method, gave a good fit to the available length-frequency data, except for the youngest stages. Sexual growth dimorphism was not apparent. Two methods were used to estimate P/.hivin.B ratio, one involving weight-frequency distributions, the other length-frequency data. Estimates of about 2 year-1 were obtained by both methods. The length-frequency based method was found to be more straightforward.
